Rotary Club of Roselle - Roselle Park President Steve Leonard (L) presents Byron Miller, Rotary District 7510 Pure Water for the World Committee Chair, with a check in the amount of $500 supporting a clean water project in Trianon, Haiti through a Rotary International Foundation Global Grant.  

 

At a recent meeting, Rotary Club of Roselle - Roselle Park President Steve Leonard presented Byron Miller, Rotary District 7510 Pure Water for the World Committee Chair, with a check in the amount of $500 supporting a clean water project in Trianon, Haiti funded through a Rotary International Global Grant.  

 

After funding matches by Rotary District 7510 and Rotary International Foundation, Roselle - Roselle Park Rotary’s $500 will grow to $1,750.  The total amount of the project in Haiti is   $200,000 and will be funded by a number of Rotary Clubs in New York and New Jersey,  Their money will be matched and combined with funds from the Rotary International Foundation as part of the Global Grant.  

 

The Rotary International Foundation Global Grant will enable Rotarians to place a Pure Water for the World bio-sand filter in the homes of some of the poorest residents of Haiti giving them access to safe, pure drinking water.  The result will be a dramatic reduction of illnesses caused by drinking contaminated water.  

 

Bio-sand filters require no power or maintenance and are small enough to fit into any home.  It can be built entirely from local materials.

 

To make the project sustainable, residents will get training in basic hygiene and filter use.  

 

While the Westfield Rotary Club is the lead club for this project in Rotary District 7510, other District 7510 clubs including the Rotary Clubs of Flemington, Hillsboro, Carteret and Hamilton are helping to fund the project as well.  Clubs from other Rotary Districts will also contribute.  

 

The Rotary Club of Glen Falls, NY prepared the Rotary International Foundation Global Grant Application.  The Rotary Club of Petion-Ville, Haite will coordinate the grant implementation and assist in assuring that the funds are spent wisely.
